In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Zanotta Sacco bean bag chair, W. Atelier and Zanotta with the support from the DesignSingapore Council, invited local talents to join their design competition and produce creative renditions of the Sacco chair, based on the theme: “Urban Living the Asian Way”.
We take a look at the top 10 designs. Read to the end to find out which are the three winning designs, which will be exhibited in the Zanotta showroom in Milan in February 2019!
1) Shifu De Sacco by Jarrod Lim Design
Do these beads look familiar to you? Jarrod’s design is inspired by beaded seat covers often seen in taxis in Singapore previously.
2) Gen Sacco by Karyn Lim
Inspired by the value of filial piety, Karyn designed the Gen Sacco such that it can be joined with another piece with the clever use of zippers. Its design symbolises the connection of family and people.
3) Pastiche by Tiffany Loy
Tiffany is inclined to investigate time-honoured subjects and recreate them from a contemporary perspective. Her bean bag design takes on her own interpretation of the Ikat technique where she created a handpainted and woven skin.
4) Pleat by Gabriel Tan Studio
Designer Gabriel took inspiration from the paper lanterns commonly used in festivities in the east, resulting in this geometric, pleated look.
5) Tarp by Dazingfeelsgood
Often seen at construction site, the use of the blue striped tarpaulin pushes the boundaries and possibilities of this industrial material.
6) Design in Singapore by Imran Othman
Additional functionality is incorporated into the design of this Sacco bean bag, such as a side table and book stand, to offer a spot for relaxing, while also ensuring it doubles as a productive workstation.
7) Handles for Sacco by Studio Juju
Introducing handles to the Sacco allows the piece to be easily moved around while also offering a graphical element over the white cover.
8) City Lights – Sa Sacco by Superfat Designs
Combining modern fabrics and new technologies like laser cutting, the design here reminds of lights in modern cities.
9) Rockett Studio
Founder Geila Daughtrey sits the Sacco bean bag on a raised platform that reminds of a lily pad. Her design intent aims at encourage users to slow down and unwind.
10) W/Sacco by tizumuka
The weaving method on the cover facilitates various interactions with the users — one can slot their phones or pens in for easy access.
