The first Standard Hotel opened in 1999 in Hollywood’s Sunset Strip. Developed by American hotelier Andre Balasz, with celebrity investors that included Leonardo Dicaprio and Cameron Diaz, it quickly gained a cult following among the country’s taste-making circle.
The Standard Hollywood closed permanently in 2021 because of the pandemic, but The Standard’s legacy lives on internationally via Standard International hotel group.
GOOD TO KNOW: The Standard plans to open a Singapore hotel in 2023 with interior designed by Ministry of Design and architecture by DP Architects. Subscribe to its newsletter for updates.
Today, the majority stakeholder of the hotel group is Sansiri, one of Thailand’s hippest developers. It operates six properties in New York, Miami, London, the Maldives, Hua Hin, soon-to-open Ibiza and finally, an Asia flagship in Bangkok.
Slated for an official grand opening this May, The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon is located in Thailand’s tallest skyscraper, the King Power Mahanakhon.
Designed by famed German architect Ole Scheeren, the 78-storey building cuts a now-iconic figure in Bangkok’s skyline with its ‘’pixelated’ volume.
The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon itself, matched the building’s design pedigree by roping Spanish multi-hyphenated creative Jaime Hayon to collaborate with its in-house design team to design its interiors.
The hotel offers 155 rooms ranging from generous 40 sq m rooms to sprawling 144 sq m penthouse.
The interiors promise vibrant colours, evolving art installations, and lush greenery spilling inside that sets the hotel apart from others in the city.
The interior of the room features a curvy design vocabulary.
The entrance lounge furnished with lighting and furniture designed by Jaime Hayon, including the Ro chair from Fritz Hansen.
The amenities include an outdoor terrace pool promising the vibrant pool scene for which The Standard is known, a gym touted to be the most advanced Bangkok can offer, event spaces, and equally cult-favourite F&B offerings.
These include the first international location of the Standard Grill, the award-winning Hong Kong restaurant Mott 32’s first Thai outpost, and hip Mexican rooftop restaurant Ojo.
The hotel also offers a retail therapy on its ground floor with a shop carrying a curated selection of local and international fashion, travel, home goods and special collaborations.
“There is nothing in Bangkok, or the entire region, like what we have created here,” said Amar Lalvani, executive chairman for Standard International.
“When we open our doors in May, visitors and locals will be treated to the world of immersive hospitality that only The Standard can create.”
The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon offers a pre-opening 25 per cent discount from Best Available Rate.
