Every style has a quintessential colour palette. There are no strict rules to these colourways, but certain hues can evoke the mood that you want your home to have. Stephanie Kraneveld, the global colour training and knowledge manager with Dulux, shares with us the suggested colours for these five themes: scandinavian, retro, beach resort, bohemian chic, and plush luxury.
Scandinavian: This minimalised style has lots of warm textures and natural materials, so go for cool colours and neutrals.

Scandinavian: Avoid high chroma colours, and if you decide to go for a darker colour, it should still fit the natural feel — a matte grey, perhaps?

Bohemian Chic: A lot of this style refers back to nature; people want to take care of the world, grow their own vegetables and re-use furniture. It’s a mixture of old and new. Go for muted tones in green, such as moss green.

Bohemian chic: Natural colours and tones are good, as they’ll fit perfectly with the plants and flowers. Don’t be afraid to add shades of purple and red, to complement the green. See more photos of this home here.

Beach resort: It could be a luxurious, Hamptons-style beach home or a rustic space, but shades of blue always do the trick in creating a restful, nature-inspired home.

Beach Resort: The ocean is made up of many shades of blue, so mix both light as well as dark hues – in different textures, too – in your space.

Retro: This theme is a bit more playful, and refers to the 70s. Back then, there were lots of bright colours like yellow, red, purple and green. See more photos of this home here.

Retro: Pair bold colours with neutral bases like beige. There were a lot of organic and circular shapes, too, in the 70s, so consider patterns for a feature wall.

Plush luxury: Darker shades can create grandeur in a space, and you’ll see this in many hotel lobbies that want to create a stunning entrance. Be bold and go for black, which is also a great neutral base, making it easy to mix and match.

Plush luxury: You can also opt for jewel tones such as purple. Avoid lilacs, and go for deeper and richer shades. See more photos of this home here.
