Most of us associate Smeg with those colourful, retro-inspired Fab fridges and solid-coloured kitchen appliances that lend a nostalgic sheen to our spaces and its unapologetically, exuberantly Italian collaboration with fashion house Dolce & Gabbana.
But did you know that the Italian brand started as an oven company, and its most hi-tech offerings are ovens and hobs? You’re in luck because now you can find all of this and see how they work at Smeg’s new experiential showroom at Marina One.

Smeg Singapore Showroom at Marina One
Designed by local interior designer Roy Teo, the 1,720 sq ft showroom is South-east Asia’s first experiential Smeg showroom.
“This location is not only central but allows us to deliver a comprehensive and inviting experience for our customers,” says Masadi Layb, general manager of Smeg Singapore. “Here, we have found the perfect combination that appeals to consumers or home chefs looking for their next home appliance, developers scouting for sleek kitchen ranges, and passers-by who are just curious about our brand.”
Entering the showroom, visitors are greeted by a green wall planted with ornamental plants and aromatic herbs.
At the far end of the room is a live kitchen that serves as a meeting place and a cooking theatre where guest chefs demonstrate the full abilities of the Smeg range.
Smeg Galileo Oven
The current centrepiece of this space is Galileo, a next-generation of algorithm-powered ovens with three cooking modes – traditional, steam and microwave – that allows home cooks to achieve professional-grade results in the home environment.
Did you know that everywhere in Europe, people prefer induction hobs except in Italy?
Smeg Stoves and Induction Hobs
All the cooking nonnas and nonnos still prefer their hobs with visible flames, much like us in Asia. Hence, Smeg’s hob and stove offerings comprise both visible and invisible flames.
Smeg Fab Fridges
Smeg got its worldwide fame in 1997 via the 50s-inspired Fab fridges.
The brand followed the success with a range of small appliances with the same aesthetic designed by Matteo Bazzicalupo and Rafaella Mangiarotti of Milan-based studio Deepdesign.
Smeg Coffee Machine
Most recently, Smeg acquired historic espresso coffee machine brand La Pavoni, which was founded in 1905, adding actual retro coffee machines (with updated technologies) to its offerings.
You can test the machines in the lounge while resting your feet and enjoying coffee and snacks prepared with Smeg appliances.
Smeg showroom is located at Marina One, The Heart, 5 Straits View, #01-01.
SMEG Fab Fridge: 7 Things to know
With its soft curves, clunky handles, and coloured body, the Smeg Fab fridge was designed to evoke a 1950s vibe. It was launched in the 1990s by Italian brand Smeg, and has since been dubbed the home appliance which melds fashion and function for its high-profile collaborations with lifestyle brands.
Smeg started out in the enamelling and metalwork industry in 1948. Smeg stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, which is “Guastalla Emilia Enamel Works” in English.
The Fab fridge is available in both right- and left-handed versions, as well as single- and two-door models.
Smeg has collaborated with many fashion and design brands, such as Italia Independent (which produced a denim-clad fridge) and Paul Smith (striped fridge) to release limited edition fridges.
In an effort to be environmentally friendly, all Smeg refrigerators are packed using non-polluting, recyclable materials.
They’ve also been awarded Good to Excellent for its energy efficiency rating by the National Environment Agency.
The Fab fridge is not the company’s only iconic product – they also launched the world’s first 14-place setting dishwasher in 1970.
The fridges continue to be manufactured in Italy today.
The Fab fridge is a Hollywood favourite! In 2011, it was featured in Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
Smeg Retro Fridge, Kettle, Coffee Machine, Toaster
If you love the reto-styled Smeg fridge, you’d want the similar retro-inspired range of kitchen appliances from Smeg as well!
Featuring similar rounded shapes and mid-century aesthetics, the collection is designed by Italian design firm Deep Design. The Smeg retro range includes a toaster, kettle, blender, and stand mixer and was first introduced to Singapore on Nov 17, 2016.
The appliances are available in six colours – black, red, cream, pastel blue, pastel green, and pink.
The design language of an enamel-coated stainless steel body, elegant control knobs, and the iconic retro logo makes the pieces look fabulous together.
Smeg Stand Mixer
The Smeg stand mixer has a planetary action direct drive motor of 800W, and you can attach optional accesssories such as a pasta roller to the front knob, so you save space on your countertop!
The stand mixer retailed for $798 when it was first released in 2016, and its price has remained since.
Smeg Toaster
The 2×2 slice Smeg toaster even has a bagel function to only brown one side of the bread without toasting the other. The toaster retailed for $228 when first released in 2016, and is priced at $258 or $268 today.
Smeg Kettle
The Smeg kettle is a 1.7litre stainless steel vessel with a 360 degree swivel base, and a soft opening feature. It also comes with a limescale filter to give you calcium-carbonate-free water. The kettle retailed for $228 in 2016, but is now priced at $268.
Smeg Blender
The Smeg blender works at 18,000 rotations per minute, and features a light easy-to-clean 1.5litre jug made of premium Tritan BPA-free plastic that is said to be better than glass.
The blender includes a 45ml measuring cup and features four speed settings as well as special ice-crush, smoothie and pulse functions. For easy cleaning, the blades are removeable, and the heat-resistant jig is dishwasher friendly. The Smeg blender retailed for $338 back in 2016, and is now priced higher at $398.
Smeg Dolce & Gabbana Fridge
In 2016, the two Italian companies came together in collaboration, producing 100 hand-painted Smeg fridges. The collaboration then took flight. Since then, we’ve had Smeg Dolce & Gabbana fridges and kitchen appliances launch every year.
Here’s a look back at some Smeg Dolce & Gabbana collections.
Smeg Dolce & Gabbana 2018
Treading the line between kitchen appliance and high fashion is the third collaborative series from Smeg and Dolce & Gabbana. Following the success of previous partnerships, the two Italian powerhouses teamed up again to draw inspiration from their heritage, specifically from the vibrant and larger-than-life Sicilian artistic style.
Named “Sicily is my Love”, the collection introduces two new prints on three eye-catching appliances: the iconic retro-style FAB28 fridge, freestanding cooker and oven, and extractor hood.
The prints are categorised into two colour groups: fiery red and orange (to represent the Sicilian puppet theatre and hand- painted carts), and cool blue and white, which was inspired by a popular majolica (tin-glazed pottery) print.
A truly “Made in Italy” project, this collaboration aims to combine an emphasis on traditional Sicilian craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology. With paintings of gold lemons, pears and red cherries, as well as floral and fauna, the artworks on the appliances are inspired by typical Sicilian decorations framed in triangular motifs called crocchi.
Other design inspirations include the coasts, landscapes and architecture of Southern Italy, like the Greek temple of Castor and Pollux in the Valley of Temples.
The Smeg X Dolce&Gabbana home appliances collection will be available in Singapore, from Sep 14 to 23, 2018.
Smeg Dolce & Gabbana 2017
Dramatic and ornate, the Dolce & Gabbana-styled Smeg refrigerators are something art aficionados will lust after and minimalists will turn their noses up at – yet, both sides will agree that it is jawdropping-ly impressive.
Each artwork is hand-drawn and painted by Sicilian artists, and depicts images inspired by Italian heritage, from Sicilian carts and famous folklore illustrations to marionette theatres. Very apt for two made-in-Italy brands, we say!
On the refrigerators, you’ll spot medieval knights, battle scenes, the Trinacria symbol, and classic floral motifs. These unique patterns were also seen in Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2016 fashion collection.
The artists – including Alice Valenti, who also works in interior design and theatre, and ceramicists Antonio and Giuseppe Bevilacqua – are all trained in traditional decorative arts.
Dolce & Gabbana painted their Southern Italian-style motifs onto five Smeg appliances. Similar to the fridges, kitchen appliances ranging from coffee maker, bread toasters, blenders, kettles, and kitchen mixers featured hand painted designs.
For the avid fashion buff or the uncompromising homeowner, getting the entire set (along with the fridge perhaps) may be the perfect way to bring the look of your kitchen together.
However, be prepared to fork out a pretty sum for these high-fashion kitchen togs. Judging by the cost of the fridge ($48,000), these babies will likely cost much more than your typical appliance. The Smeg X D&G collection will be available in Singapore in October 2017.
