Singapore Design Week is here, and there are plenty of events and activities happening around town; one of which is the ‘House of Grafunkt’! Starting on March 9, the event begins with the co-founders of local furniture retailers Grafunkt, Nathan Yong and Jefery Kurniadidjaja, showcasing the latest furniture collection in store, including a series of stools designed in collaboration with Lasalle.
These eight stools were designed by students of Lasalle, each highlighting the designer’s unique interpretation of one of the most common furniture pieces in every home. For example, the Femme stool (pictured) designed by Muhammad Irfan, is inspired by the shape of a diamond, with its tapered legs that cradle the seat.

Wong Ji Siang wanted to address issues of seating posture and decided to design his version of the stool — Frames (pictured) — which has a slanted seat so the user tilts forward when seated. This helps relieve back pressure, allowing the front and back muscles to relax. As such, users are constantly reminded to sit in an upright position.

Also available at Grafunkt are iconic furniture pieces from Spanish brand Sancal. Known for its clean lines and sleek look, the Tip Toe sofa by Rafa Garcia is contemporary yet minimalist, with its design embodying simplicity and functionality. The slim legs in copper or graphite finishes make the sofa look as if it is floating, or as the name suggests, walking on tip-toes around the living room.

Swedish design Studio Note has also recently designed a range of classical inspired French-style chairs for Sancal. The design takes on the form of Spanish wine barrels with straight line quilting running down the piece that also complements the seat’s support structure.

Sancal also carries pieces like side and coffee tables, including the Duplex designed by Valencian studio, Mut. Like nesting tables, various pieces can be combined to offer varying heights and dimensions. Mix and match colours and finishes, too, for an interesting look, as there are various stains and lacquers to choose from for the wood veneered top.
