SG.ID Seen is a regular column on Home & Decor, where we pick out some of the most interesting home interior projects completed by designers in Singapore and share what we like about them.
With apartment home layouts getting smaller and more restricted, it can be a challenge creating a look that is simple and uncluttered yet functional and tasteful. Local ID studio MAD About Design took on the challenge for this particular HDB home in Clementi, turning this conventional apartment into a sleek and sophisticated home.
The straight lines in the living room are what catches the eye as soon as you step into this home. The simplicity of the cabinetry and furniture gives a smart and enduring feel. The sharpness of the lines are softened with the use of earthy colours and smooth textures.
We also like the team’s attention to detail, such as adding wall texture, discreet downlights and partially concealing the wall-mount air con so it doesn’t become an eyesore.
Use of the same wood veneer throughout the living and open kitchen helps to bring both spaces together, creating the impression of a much larger space. Matte black tiles for the backsplash, along with the sleek black countertop, provide a beautiful contrast to the light wood tones. Notice how there are also no handles on the cabinetry in order to achieve a flush, seamless effect across the walls.
Instead of visually closing off the utility yard, the ID opted to expose it behind black-framed glass panels. It’s a great way to segregate the functional zone while still allowing for plenty of natural light to fill the space during the day.
To conceal the storage room in the kitchen, the door panel is designed to be as tall as the length of the wall and has no handles too. This is a great idea if you are also thinking of concealing a bomb shelter or other storage areas.
Black accents used throughout the space add a sense of depth and cosiness to the look of the space.
Notice how the subtle differences in the grey tones of the wall tiles give the kitchen a modern and unique style.
The dark statement wall in the master bedroom is offset by a half-height wall in cream, finished in a similar textured effect. The concealed wall lighting provides an ambient glow to the space, great for use when you are winding down for the day.
The bathroom may be simply designed, but the gentle and organic curves of the sink and mirror allow them to stand out prominently. By becoming the focus of the small space, they result in creating a more spacious-looking bathroom that can also become a space for a personal retreat.
