A maverick in many ways, self-taught industrial designer Tom Dixon knows how to infuse a sense of humour and edginess in the often serious world of design. We curate 7 signature pieces by him that we love.
1. Mirror Ball pendant lamp
A true signature Tom Dixon piece, the Mirror Ball is inspired by the space helmet and disco balls. Tom had originally hoped that the Mirror Ball’s highly polished surface would become invisible by reflecting its surrounding, but it ended up doing the polar opposite. By mirroring the room, and because of its shiny material, it became highly visible instead. Its success story is uplifting to all wannabe designers: Sometimes your biggest failures could be your biggest successes.

2. Delaktig collection for IKEA
When Tom Dixon approached Ikea for a collaboration, he wanted to make a coffin, although the Swedish furniture giant thought better of it. The compromise resulted in Delaktig, a customisable bed-sofa-armchair that Dixon dubs ‘a platform for living’. Released early this year, you can also get higher end accessories to dress yours up from Tom’s site. Read about our interview with Tom and James Futcher, IKEA’s creative leader here.
The Delaktig collection is available at IKEA Alexandra and Tampines. Click here for more information.

Inspired by the British classic Wingback chair dating from the 17th century, Tom gives a fresh spin in his collection of Wingback chairs that come in different back heights, colours, and leg finishes.
