2-Room HDB, Toa Payoh
The owner of this 460 sq ft (42 sqm) 2-room HDB flat in Toa Payoh has lived here his entire life.
Up until a few years ago he had to share the small space with four other family members, and when he finally got the place all to himself, he decided to turn the flat into a space-efficient bachelor pad.
Sliding Shutter Doors
Thanks to the foyer’s sliding glass shutter panels, the dining area can now be hidden from the common corridor – but it still enjoys the natural light that streams in from the corridor’s windows.

Customised Bookshelf
The owner, who is also an interior designer, customised a deep U-shaped bookshelf that doubles as a cosy reading nook around the living room’s window.

Floor Storage Platform
Instead of allocating previous floor space to storage compartments, the owner created a platform that serves as a “store floor” to keep his possessions hidden.

Panel Doors
Swinging panels made of steel mesh were devised to partially conceal the rubbish chute and appliances in the utility area.

Studio Condo at Handy Road
Well aware of the space constraints of his 465 sq ft (43 sqm) studio apartment at Handy Road, the owner had to make some sacrifices, such as a dining table, to free up space for small gatherings.

Storage Shelves
The owner designed a series of open white boxes that can be stacked to form a shelving-cum-partition unit to display personal knick-knacks and create a demarcation between the entryway and living areas.

Hacked Study Room
Doing away with dining and study areas gave the owner more space for entertaining friends.

Only sliding doors will work in a space as tight as this.
