While homeowners who undertake their own renovations often recall the experience as a headache-inducing one, Robert Chin speaks of it like it was a cinch.
“I wanted this home to be completely different from my previous place, which was contemporary. This time, I wanted my home to look lived-in,” he explains.
3-Room HDB at Stirling Road
It was with this rough concept in mind that the bachelor set out in search for ideas and furnishings that would give his 735 sq ft (68 sqm) 3-bedroom HDB flat in Stirling Road a cool grungy feel.

Travel Memories
Blending in seamlessly with Robert’s pre-loved finds are the vibrant art pieces he has collected over the years during his travels around Asia.
These art pieces, each with its unique story and cultural significance, bring an enchanting fusion of colors and textures to Robert’s home.

Bangkok furniture thrifting
He did a lot of shopping in Bangkok, where he picked up rusted metal buckets to turn into lampshades; antique stools, vintage cabinets, as well as mid-century-inspired armchairs with vibrant upholstery at reasonable prices.

Vintage furniture from Singapore
While Robert flew in most of his vintage collection from Bangkok, the freshly painted-yet-still nostalgic wardrobe was picked up from a vintage store in Alexandra Road.

Repurposed dining table
A cosy cafe-like corner was sufficient to serve as a dining area for the sole occupant.
The dining table is repurposed from an old sewing machine, bringing a touch of rustic charm to the industrial setting.
The contrast between the warm, natural wood and the industrial metal of the sewing machine creates a visually appealing juxtaposition, adding character to the space.

Monotone kitchen design
Although monotone, this kitchen turned out whimsical thanks to the intriguing pairing of black and white finishes.
The subway tiles and open shelving on the bottom cabinets add to the grunge feel, while the pop of colour offered by the mini fridge makes it more interesting.

Checkered floor tiles
The clash of finishes in this corner of the kitchen is a perfect example of how Robert isn’t afraid to experiment with looks.
The texture of the tiles, reminiscent of Lego, breaks up the monotony and lends some playful vibes.
