Editor’s Note: This project garnered the Silver award for Best Residential Design (Private Houses), at the IDCS 2020 Design Excellence Awards.
This old bungalow in Seremban, Malaysia, underwent a complete transformation to become the bright, luxurious contemporary family home is it today.
The interior design team from Pins Studio was tasked to reconfigure the home so that it would have larger communal spaces and bedrooms.
To address the brief, they kept only the existing living room, family room, and staircase. The rest of the home – including the dining, kitchen and utility rooms on the ground floor and the bedroom on the upper level – were completely revamped.
Who Lives Here: A large family
Home: Bungalow in Seremban, Malaysia
Size: 7,437 sq ft (691 sqm)
Interior Design: Pins Studio
Open Concept Kitchen
Set in an open-plan layout, the newly-renovated spaces were designed around the central element of a custom-built cabinet.
Wet and Dry Kitchen
This cabinet’s main function was to conceal a large structural column that was in the middle of the home, while demarcating the wet kitchen, laundry room, and dry kitchen.
It also serves as useful concealed storage for several appliances, including the wine chiller and oven.
In the dry kitchen, a modern minimalist backdrop was created with the use of a pristine all-white palette with contrasting black shelves.

Curved Wall
Behind, the central cabinet serves as both column concealment and practical hidden storage.
The interior design team used delicate details like curved edges for a contemporary edge, and also to soften the overall look, like the corner of the cabinet here.

Timeless interior design
“Throughout this home, our intention is to express the use of curves in a different way by pairing it up with modern ideas and trendy materials,” says the design team.”
Curves proved to be a very versatile element, and when combined with the right touches, they have a timeless, incomparable quality to them.”

Dark wood
The use of cool, dark wood tones throughout the home lends it a cohesive palette.
“In this home, the concept of simplicity and serenity is beautifully expressed in the form of sublime details.
Interior design is all about essential elements, it can still be taken to the next level with careful application of colours and textures to create a visual interest that soothes our senses,” says the interior design team.

In the living room, a dark-toned feature wall dominates the space, balanced out by the use of soft furnishings and light neutral hues.
An enormous U-shaped sofa invites guests to sit and get comfortable.

Open bathroom concept
Right behind the study area, the space flows into the walk-in wardrobe and bathroom suite.
The bathroom is open-concept, and in the absence of doors, the design team carefully selected materials to demarcate the different spaces.

Marble bathroom
In the walk-in wardrobe, the wood flooring and dark timber shelves create a cosy yet luxurious space.
Upon stepping into the bathroom clad in light-toned marble, the space transitions into a cooler, more relaxed environment.
The subtle contrast adds to the unique spatial experience of the home.
