It’s difficult to carve out a personal sanctuary when you are living in one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
The homeowners of this property in Simei gave Hyla Architects the ultimatum of creating a home that would make them feel like they are escaping from the hustle and bustle of the city every time they return.
Elevated Landed Home
One of the first things award-winning Hyla Architects did, was to rebuild the property from the ground up. This meant elevating the entire home above street level, and away from its neighbours on all sides.
A glass stairway leads to the large timber doors.
Above it, metallic screens cast a mysterious shadow play of dark stripes, as if seperating the outside world from the home.

Peace & Tranquility
Once through the doors, you enter into a realm of peace and tranquility.
A large pool of water helps to calm down your senses as you traverse a glass runway across to the main living area.

At the end of the glass runway lies a spiral staircase leading to the upper floor. Situated behind it, on another floor, lies the main living areas and the kitchen.

A Play on Space
A white scheme doesn’t have to mean boring storage panelling. Space can be made for displays as a creative way of breaking up the monotony.

The main feature of the home is the spiral staircase, which rises from the water like a stream of light.
