Most of us aspire to have a home that is a haven for unwinding after a long day. Lisa Oake and Sanjay Mirchandani’s four-bedroom apartment fits that bill perfectly. On the outside, its facade blends with the rest of Singapore’s residential architecture, but step inside and you’ll be transported to an idyllic, meticulously created countryside retreat interwoven with Asian elements that’s huge on personality and echoes their unique tastes.
Type of home: A four-bedroom Mimosa Road condominium apartment
Size of home: 2,157 sq ft
Who lives here: A couple, their two teenage sons, two cats and a dog
ID: Square Room Interior Design & Mudian
When looking for a place, a freehold apartment was at the top of their list. “We love old freehold condos with a nice square layout. This checked our boxes for being quiet and spacious. “My cousin Vanita Dadlani helped us nail this apartment. Initially reluctant to part with it, the previous owner wanted it to go to someone who would appreciate it,” says Sanjay.
Its architectural star is undoubtedly the stone arch framing the kitchen entrance and extending towards the balcony. Unable to find the right stones to create the rustic look the owners wanted, they found a large boulder at Hot Spring Stone and had it cut into smaller pieces.

Every stone was cut and reshaped by an artisan. “Uniform pieces wouldn’t feel as rustic and authentic”, says Lisa.

Evoking a warm, welcoming vibe, the kitchen was originally a bedroom with a bathroom that connected to the current master bedroom. Designed by Calsia Lee of kitchen and wardrobe specialist Mudian, it is anchored by a large kitchen island with a South American suarwood top that caters to Lisa’s love for cooking. It is complemented by a butler’s pantry with rows of condiments that sits on one side.

From a 250-year-old cast-iron fireback imported from Paris to a carved 106cm copper sink custom made in India, unique details infuse the space, also the couple’s favourite spot for chilling out and hosting guests, with vintage flair. While a lot of the decor pieces came from the couple’s respective homes before they tied the knot, they meld together beautifully here. Many were also sourced from antique stores as well as shipped from India.

Across from the kitchen, brass pots and chains from India rest on a raised platform and stained glass pendant lamps from a shop on Arab Street add charm to the dining area.

The design of the rest of the home was overseen by Richard Pang of Square Room Interior Design. The living room boasts wood look floor tiles and other furnishings with Asian influences, including a wooden cabinet painted with flowers and a coffee table repurposed from an old wooden door.

Down the hallway, the master bedroom has a walk-in closet – also designed by Calsia – that used to be a part of what’s now the kitchen. There are also various furnishings the couple has collected over the years as well as an imported painted wooden cabinet from Tibet, an ottoman from India, a Chinese scenic painting and a custom vanity corner for Lisa.

To pull their beautiful home together, most of their free time went on poring over interior design magazines, googling websites and sourcing for the right materials to achieve the look and ambience they wanted. The renovation took four and a half months before the family finally moved in in April 2019.
Pictured is a 350-year-old iron fireback from Paris in the entryway is the first hint of what guests can expect here.

Says Lisa: “We threw in everything we loved. At first, we were worried that it would be too much and look tacky. Then we decided not to stick to any particular style. If we love something, that’s all that matters.”
