Futurism meets nostalgia at the recently opened Forte Bistro Shanghai, a lounge designed by RooMoo Design Studio. The 45sqm space, spread out over a single floor and mezzanine, is the latest addition to the Cachet Boutique Hotel on Nanjing West Road.
It’s hard to miss, given the red lighting that illuminates the balconies in stark contrast to the sombre grey brick façade of the refurbished 1920s building. “In colour psychology, red suggests uninhibitedness, enthusiasm, and social interaction, while grey is a classic colour that represents stillness,” says RooMoo Design Studio. The red is also a part of Forte’s visual brand identity.
To create a smooth transition between the colours, the design team incorporated materials such as metal to reflect some of the red lighting while blending into the grey brick. Inside, curved surfaces echo the rounded shape of the exterior. Visitors are greeted by a stainless steel mirror suspended asymmetrically from the ceiling, as well as a curved bar and staircase leading up to the mezzanine level.
These rounded elements lend a modern sleekness and edgy dynamism to the space, illuminated as they are with red LED lighting. “At different angles, different images are reflected from each other,” says RooMoo Design Studio of the placement of the mirror.
In fact, lighting plays a crucial role in the design strategy. One feels as though something exciting is always happening in every corner of the lounge, thanks to the colour-changing LED strips on the bar counter and the use of glass bricks to reflect and transmit light. The result is a constantly moving, buzzing space alive with the electric energy that typifies urban Shanghai.
To pay tribute to the heritage of the building, RooMoo Design Studio decided to incorporate a similar grey brick into the space, particularly in the construction of the bar counter, floor, walls, and stairs. “We wanted to retain the representative elements of the century-old building and continue the design language from the outdoors to the indoors,” says the design team.
Utilising the space efficiently was another priority for the team. Since space is at a premium, they incorporated small pull-out tables at strategic points, giving guests a space to put down their drink when needed. Instead of traditional seating, they added cushioning for people to lean on. The full-height liquor shelves, too, were a conscious design choice to maximise available space and emphasise the height of the lounge.
With the mix of urban vibes and nostalgia, it’s the Shanghai lounge scene at its best. “We hoped to create a unique environment that was both chaotic and fluid at once,” says RooMoo Design Studio. “It’s where intoxicating wine and captivating music blend.”
