Salone del Mobile, the largest design and furniture exhibition of its kind that is held annually in Milan, has been postponed to 2021 due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Here are some design highlights that were meant to have made an appearance at the show.
Space Table Lamp
Moooi’s release for 2020 – destined for the suspended Salone del Mobile furniture fair – is the Space Table Lamp, which offers an unusual spin on a regular lighting appliance. It has a slender mirrored surface and sits unobtrusively in the home. However, once switched on, it reveals a depth filled with different lighting hues. Material and technique work together in an unconventional way to create this element of surprise, which is characteristic of designer Ward Wijnant’s works
Plissee Floor Lamp
Classicon and designer Sebastian Herkner’s new Plissee Floor Lamp turns our perceptions of glass upside down. The lampshade, reminiscent of artfully pleated textile, is actually hand-blown glass atop a metal base. While glass conveys a sense of hardness, it’s testament to the masterful craftsmanship that the lamp, like a weightless glowing balloon, adds a soft, cosy feel to interiors. The light source is a dimmable LED.
NYNY Storage Units And Bookcases
The new NYNY family of storage units from Gebruder Thonet Vienna (GTV) has a strong design language inspired by postmodernism and comes in an intense chromatic composition. Designed by Storagemilano, the stack of geometric volumes references the architecture of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City. Wall-mounted on a metal structure, the asymmetrical unit has two drawers below and upper compartments with doors. The lower door offers desk functionality when folded down.
Trino Tables
The 2020 additions to the Viccarbe collection include the Trino range of low tables by Elisa Ossino that have a sculptural personality and are interestingly designed with handles rising from the centre, which come in metal, solid oak and marble options. Easy to move, Trino reflects the interplay of function and form.
Vico Duo Chair
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Italian designer Vico Magistretti’s birth, Fritz Hansen has reissued the Vico Duo chair. Designed by Magistretti in 1997 with a sleek, modernist silhouette, its unusual backward armrests were inspired by a loose ‘z’ line drawn across paper. Another unique aspect: The armrests and backlegs are one piece of steel.
