Italian brand Dorelan produces patented mattresses using unique raw materials and technology. It also offers beautifully designed bed frames that are customisable to suit all interiors.
Cristian Bergamaschi, 45, the son of one of the two founders of the brand, has worked for the company since his teenage years.
How does it feel to be one of the second-generation owners of the company?
Dorelan was founded by my father and his business partner in 1968. The second generation consists of the four sons — my brother and me, and the two sons of the other founder. It is a business run by family friends, so I feel a lot of responsibility, but I’m also proud of what my father has achieved and I’m excited to continue it. There is a positive energy among us and we are all rather optimistic for the future.
How are your products unique?
We can customise mattresses and bed frames according to the end user’s needs. For example, for a double bed, you can have half the mattress firm and the other half soft! It appears as one piece with a double cover, but the mattress core is split into two. As far as I know, Dorelan is the only brand in Italy to provide such a solution. There are also 150 fabric choices for the upholstered bed frames, which have removable covers that can be washed.

In terms of trends, what’s next for mattresses?
It depends on the country and its market. In Europe, polyurethane foam and memory foam are currently popular. Foam has reached its peak there, so I think we will move towards pocket spring mattresses. There are some new technologies available for pocket spring mattresses.
On the other hand, in Asia, American brands are focusing on spring mattresses, but consumers are looking for something different and new, so foam and memory foam represent “cutting edge” technology there, and I see the material getting more popular.
Any tips on what to look out for when choosing a mattress?
You have to lie on the mattress for 10 to 15 minutes, otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the various models.
A mattress is like a pair of shoes; you have to try them on for yourself. After all, it is an investment that could last from seven to 10 years and you spend a third of your life on it.
