Very Peri, Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2022, marks the first time Pantone has crafted a brand new shade instead of selecting one from its vast repertoir of colours.
The blue with a warm purple undertone represents the merging of our physical and digital worlds and aims to introduce newness into these transformative times.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, shares more.
Pantone chose a duet of colours last year. Why just one colour this year?
We strive to express colours in the best way possible. It might take one colour to do this in any given year or occasionally two, so it can vary depending on the message we wish to impart.

Very Peri is Pantone’s first colour explicitly created as a colour of the year. But why now?
In response to worldwide changes and adjustments in habits and attitudes, we felt it necessary to introduce a new colour to mark a new way of thinking.

What are some tips on how to use Very Peri in our home?
Start with small items like small household appliances or carpets, accessories like pillows and bed linens, tabletop pieces and ceramics, or within a pattern, then progress to larger surfaces like a painted wall or small furniture.
It would be an exciting colour to use on a piece of furniture that’s beginning to fade.

What complementary colours should I pair with Very Peri?
In the strictest sense of the word, complementary means opposites on the colour wheel. Try the yellow-orange family, going from the darker browns to terracotta and descending to peach and apricot.

Very Peri represents the merging of physical and digital spaces. Blue light from screens (and too much screen time in general) is said to be harmful to our health. How will Very Peri mitigate this?
The red-violet undertone found in Very Peri would help mitigate the effects of intense blue light.

As our home becomes more of a multifunctional space, how do you see this colour influencing our mood at home?
Because of the red-violet undertone, Very Peri would have an uplifting effect. As well as representing constancy, the mother colour embodies a sense of comfort and familiarity. It is a happy marriage within the same hue.

Many brands chose pastel green/blue/beige as the 2022 colour of the year. How do you see Very Peri being paired with these colours?
It adds a note of creativity and uniqueness to pastels or neutrals, adding a fresh new approach.
