Nestled atop a hill in a sprawling estate of four and a half acres is a spacious modern farmhouse belonging to a family of five.
Designed by lead designer Kristen Fiore of Kristen Elizabeth Design, the 11-bedroom home is a new construction whose rustic interiors and earthy palette reflect the surrounding foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, just east of California’s agricultural valley.
This idyllic family home in the country is just what the homeowners wanted, removed from the city’s bustle and suburbia’s dreariness.
Within its estate is everything a family could possibly want – an orchard of fruit trees, a natural-style pool, trampolines, and farm animals.
Every design decision was a team approach, says Kristen.
AT A GLANCE
Home: An 11-bedroom farmhouse in Loomis, California
Who lives here: A faily of five
Interior Designer: Kristen Elizabeth Design
The homeowners wanted a warm, cosy atmosphere similar to that of a mountain cabin, but with modern and classic elements incorporated into the overall look.
They chose deeper earthy tones for the surfaces, complemented with lighter furnishings and pops of colour here and there that brighten up the space.

Kristen layered metal elements into key elements around the home, retaining a modern edge that’s almost industrial in its approach.
For instance, the stair bannisters and hallway railing are in raw steel.

In the main bathroom, a custom hot-rolled steel fireplace surround provides a contrast with the parquet flooring and view of the oak trees outside, coming together to frame the statement bathtub.

Kristen created a spa-like atmosphere for the master bath, with a sculptural bathtub on an elevated platform with its own fireplace.

It’s the same story in the kitchen, where the cool metallic finishes of the refrigerator and chairs play off the more rustic elements, like the Zellige tiles on the backsplash and a charming chalkboard-styled door.

Above, an eclectic collection of ceramics sits on open shelving behind a lattice of metal grilles. This design touch ties together the modern-rustic look and creates another layer of depth to the kitchen.

“The space had to be large enough to host, entertain and feed a family of five, but also guests for larger events,” says Kristen of the kitchen’s layout.
“We wanted the kitchen to feel like you could use just one part of it and gather around the bar, but also use the dining space for a larger open-concept feel, blending both spaces. This is a very flexible floor plan in that way.”

In the communal areas overlooking the foothills, the choice of materials creates a natural transition between the indoors and outdoors.

To add warmth, Kristen picked a caramel stain for the wood beams, which are made of reclaimed oak.
Lighting also played an essential role in the design strategy – in the daytime, plenty of light floods in through the generous windows, while at night, the home’s architectural details are highlighted by the directional lighting from the ceiling mounts over the island and dining area.
Features like the custom-built bookcases flanking the fireplace are lit from underneath.

Even the art was carefully chosen with the overall design outcome in mind. Most of it was brought in for colour and mood.
To lighten the earthy tone of the home, Kristen and the homeowners chose images with water to lend an element of fluidity and lightness.
These also serve to mirror the natural-style pool outside, connecting the indoors and outdoors.

With its dialogue between the modern and rustic, natural and architectural, the home will stand the test of time. “Our ultimate goal is to create a space of beauty, which is felt by all who enjoy it,” says Kristen.
