Belonging to a former owner of an antique shop, this 3,100 sq ft (287 sqm) corner terrace house at Upper Bukit Timah has an abundance of antique gems.
However, with a boxed up layout that resulted in dark interiors, these pieces could hardly shine. To bring daylight into their home, the homeowners engaged interior designer Shawn Shum of Mint Studio to reconfigure the layout.
Kitchen
The kitchen was opened up to let in more light, with new cabinets and flooring installed. This space is now very visible from the living and dining areas as it is walled in with glass.
Under Stairs Storage
A storeroom under the staircase was demolished and turned into a water feature, bringing some welcome texture and softness.
Dark Wood Staircase
The old dark wood staircase was lightened considerably by removing the risers and handrail, and replacing the treads with solid timber planks.
Exposed Brick Walls
The original brick walls were simply painted over to allow their rusticity to pervade the space.
Attic Flooring Panels
A large part of the budget went to adding an attic with timber plank flooring. Although spanking new, the space retains some old-world character with its original, decade-old brick walls, now painted grey.
Master Bedroom
White, grey and wood tones dominate the bedroom. A pair of black and white prints of Paris keep Cindi’s husband’s country close to home.
Arched Windows
The arched windows lend a stately, old-world air to the new bathroom. Toiletries are kept in baskets stowed below the marble vanity top. An old wooden bucket from China holds towels.
