The original architectural design of this semi-detached house was a mirror image of that of its neighbour’s, so when the homeowners bought over the site, they wanted to differentiate itself from the others.
They approached architect William of Studio Wills with the intention to rebuild a house that appears taller than what is permissible.
From the outside, ventilation blocks create a linear patterned design on the facade.
The placement of larger-sized blocks at the lower level, and smaller blocks at the higher levels, is a strategy William uses to accentuate the elevation and building height through false perspectives.
Ventilation Blocks
Aside from aesthetic purposes, ventilation blocks also allows natural air to enter the interiors, and filters daylight.

Deep overhangs also serve to shield spaces from the harsh direct sunlight.

Black Staircase
From the living and dining area, the black staircase makes a bold statement in the mostly-white palette house.
It also helps to shield the main areas from more private spaces such as the bedrooms.

Indoor Courtyard
A covered courtyard sits in the centre of the house, and greenery is introduced into the interior space.
With a double-volume space here, William created pockets of spaces where family members at intermediate spaces on the higher levels can still communicate with people on the lower floors.

Framed Windows
Cut-out frame designs are incorporated into the wall by the staircase to offer visual connection between spaces.

Master Bedroom
In the master suite, stairs lead to the resting area. In the day, generous daylight illuminates the interiors, thanks to full-height windows, leading out to a small balcony ledge where a planter sits.

Master Bathroom
The master bathroom is situated at the space behind the headboard. White subway tiles are used here to add a textural effect, while plants add a splash of green into this intimate space.

Attic
The attic opens up to panoramic views of the surrounding, while still offering homeowners privacy as it is positioned slightly higher when compared with neighbouring houses.
