It’s not very often that a home is designed with young ones as a priority. When the homeowners of this 120sqm Tree House condominium apartment approached Kalyn of Home Journal to design their home, they wanted it to be a place of work and play for their two young sons, who are home-schooled. Additionally, they loved the modern Aussie country-home look, having been inspired from a recent holiday down under.
The result is a beautiful, spacious home that provides a conducive environment for the family to learn together. In keeping with the requested look, Kalyn used elements like herringbone wood for the flooring, wooden ceiling beams, and patterned tiles to add visual interest in the kitchen and bathroom.
As educators, the homeowners wanted their sons to have a conducive place for developing a love of reading. To do this while keeping to the theme of the country home, Kalyn designed a fireplace-style feature wall that conceals the TV — except that instead of a fireplace, there’s a bookshelf, transforming the living room into a cosy reading nook. This helps to reduce distractions, especially when the children need to study.

To give it a modern country-home feel, Kalyn added wooden ceiling beams that draw the eye upward and add a touch of rusticity.

The open-concept kitchen is simple yet functional, with a peninsula counter for food prep and grabbing a quick meal. Wainscoting was added to the cabinet doors for detail, elevating the overall look.

The bathroom was originally rather plain, so Kalyn added an overlay of fan-shaped mosaic tiles in an array of cool tones to create a feature wall.

Since there wasn’t a store room in the home, they had to get creative with storage — hence the platform bed in the master bedroom, which provides concealed space to tuck things away. This also allowed for flexible sleeping arrangements, since they can simply add an extra single-size mattress for when the kids like to sleep over in the parents’ room.

Wooden accents and interesting floor tiles help to spruce up this bathroom while retaining its country-home feel.
