Bringing the light in and emphasising the high ceilings of this home: these were the top priorities of homeowner Roy when he approached Kalyn of Home Journal to design and renovate his condominium penthouse in Kovan.
Roy, who lives there with his son and pet husky, also needed a space that was great for hosting while remaining practical and pet-friendly.
To address the design brief, Kalyn opened up the space by hacking walls and removing the old false ceiling from the previous renovation. This added plenty of extra vertical space. Kalyn also enhanced the air and light flow by creating windows within the home itself.

Since the homeowner only does light cooking, Kalyn removed the wall between the kitchen and the rest of the home, opening it up for better integration with the dining area. The result is a chic bar-like space that’s great for social interaction.
Since there were a number of structural beams that could not be removed, Kalyn covered them up with vertical woodgrain laminates for a luxe touch.

In the original design, there was a lot of under-utilised bay window space. The homeowner wanted more storage instead, so Kalyn created full-height cabinets in the space.
There were also three different ceiling heights in the living, dining and kitchen areas to contend with. In order to create a sense of continuity, Kalyn put in a long wood-grain feature ceiling with recessed spotlights. The resulting look helps to draw the eye upwards and enhances the height of the space.

At the entryway, a stone wall laminate was used to conceal the bomb shelter and create additional shoe storage at the same time.

To get more natural light in, Kalyn created windows within the home, including at the stairwell. This enables the homeowner to enjoy the view of the greenery at the outdoor balcony even when he’s in the comfort of his bedroom.

In the loft master bedroom, the false ceiling was removed to add more vertical space. This also opened up more possibilities for storage, so Kalyn added in a sliding ladder for the homeowner to access items that are stored higher up.
