Having outgrown their previous Scandinavian interior design style apartment of seven years, this couple, both legal professionals in their 30s, decided on a more refined, modern luxe design for their new home.
Of all the shortlisted designers, a visit to one of interior design firm Parenthesis’ ongoing projects sealed the deal.
“Though the project that we visited was not in the style that we wanted, we were impressed with the overall aesthetic and the quality of the workmanship,” recalls the couple. It also showcased Parenthesis’ design director Yanika Gunawan’s keen eye for lines, colours and materials.

Shaker Style Cabinets
Interior designer Yanika took an image of a grey-toned French shaker-style kitchen with white marble flooring and herringbone timber floors that caught the clients’ attention as a starting point to explore a monochromatic scheme.
“Most of our projects lean more towards warm woods and lighter colours. It is the first time we are proposing darker tones on a monochromatic palette, “she points out.
The couple admits that the colour scheme turned out darker and moodier than they had initially envisioned, but they were convinced by the renderings.
Pet Friendly Design
The key to striking the perfect balance between the needs of humans and pet is a refined aesthetic that is also practical.
“We did not want the interior to be too precious to be lived in because with a pet around, accidents do happen,” the couple comments.
This explains the choice of durable materials that can withstand a certain amount of wear and tear over time.
Renovations Cost: $255,000
The renovations took about five months and cost approximately $255,000, including furniture and appliances.
What the homeowners love most is the cohesiveness of the design. The colours, materials and textures flow from one space to another, and nothing feels out of place.
“Yanika has managed to marry form and function to create a practical home to live in and beautiful to look at,” says the husband.
Interior designer Yanika feels that this project has certainly elevated the firm’s portfolio. She shares: “The clients put their trust in us and gave us a lot of freedom to explore finishes and details that we have not attempted before. It was an exceptionally fulfilling project as I felt they really valued my opinion.”
Reed Glass Door
With the main door replaced by reeded glass panels, light can filter into the entrance foyer to brighten up the existing private lift lobby, making it feel more spacious.
Condo with private lift
The main door itself has been redesigned with an arched profile, which helps to soften the composition when viewed from the living and dining area.

Open Concept Kitchen
As the couple often hosts family and friends, the living, dining and kitchen areas adopt an open-concept layout that allows the spaces to connect seamlessly, making them more conducive for gatherings.

Living Room Rug
The rug and sofa’s position define the living room from the adjacent dining room, while a peninsula island demarcates the pantry and kitchen zones, all without breaking the spatial flow between the three spaces.

Kitchen peninsula
The kitchen underwent extensive renovations. An existing wall separating the dry and wet kitchens was hacked to open up the space.
The kitchen peninsula island was pushed out slightly into the corridor to enlarge the kitchen area and make space for the pantry the couple requested in their brief.
This is where they have their breakfast and a cuppa.

Kitchen Cabinet
A full-height coffee counter cabinet acts as a divider between the pantry and the wet kitchen.
Since moving in in March 2022, the kitchen is, without a doubt, the wife’s favourite space within the home.
“The aesthetic is everything I wanted. As a result of having the right space and setting, I have been baking and cooking a lot more,” she shares.

The master bedroom features a dark wood-panelled headboard with contrasting cream-coloured upholstery inserts.

Floor to Ceiling Wardrobe
The floor-to-ceiling wardrobe-cum-dresser unit is also finished in a dark wood laminate.

Dark Bedroom
Surprisingly, the dark colour palette is not overpowering or sombre. The couple admitted that it was not something they thought they would have liked, but they ended up loving the restful and cosy ambience.

Freestanding Bathtub
A freestanding bathtub replaces an existing sunken bath in the master bathroom.
Together with the suspended cabinet below the wash basin, wall-mounted storage shelves with mirrored doors above, and the refreshing monochromatic colour scheme, the master bathroom exudes a bright and breezy feel.

Study Room
One of the bedrooms has been converted into a study that allows the couple to work from home more comfortably.
However, the provisions in this room, as well as in the rest of the home, cater not just to the couple, but to their fur kid too.
The bay window in the study has been designed with upholstery so that they can lounge when taking a break and their toy poodle can rest while its owners are working.
