We already know that ergonomic furniture is beneficial, but how important exactly is it for children?
Children’s spines are still developing, so it is important that they practise good sitting habits. Bad posture can lead to increased strain on the muscles, ligaments, joints and bones. As your child is still growing, bad posture can also lead to spinal issues and increased arthritis later in life. A large study by Leboeuf-Yde and Kyyik in 1998 also found that causes of lower back pain can start in children. Prevention of spinal problems and back pain therefore also needs to start in childhood.
Good posture reduces fatigue. Good posture also helps your children focus. Various studies show that poor posture can actually cause chronic fatigue because of the strain on the muscles. Making good posture a regular habit is essential to fighting off physical and mental fatigue.
Good posture encourages a better mood. Other studies have found that students who slouch tend to think more negatively while students who stand or sit up have an easier time thinking positively.
When it comes to ergonomic chairs, you’ll want to find something that reduces pressure on the spine. Look for a chair that can be adjusted to match your kids as they grow. For good sitting posture, your child should be following the 90-90-90 rule. This means;
- Their back should be straight and form a 90-degree angle with their thighs
- Their thighs should be flat on the chair and form a 90-degree angle with the seat
- Both feet should rest flat on the floor to form a 90-degree angle with the shins
To facilitate good posture, your child’s study table should be height-adjustable. A table top that can be angled also helps to support your child’s upright posture. Aside from that, look out for helpful features such as storage space, as well as a book or tablet holder.

The DUO Study Chair is suited for kids aged four and above, and is designed to better suit Asian body shapes. The double back design fits your child’s body shape and helps support their spine more effectively. It also has a footrest, which helps keep your child’s feet from dangling.
