“Through food, restaurants give us a sense of escape and reconnection,” says Hong Kong-based interior designer Andre Fu. To design Andaz Singapore’s 5 on 25, he drew on childhood memories of going to traditional Chinese restaurants and teahouses in Hong Kong.
“I remember walking into those spaces and feeling like I’d stepped back in time. They were always quite cinematic and theatrical,” he adds.

In January, 5 on 25 opened in the space formerly occupied by Auntie’s Wok and Steam restaurant on the hotel’s 25th level.

With its main dining room and two private dining suites, the restaurant offers refined Cantonese cuisine and seats a total of 70 diners.

Its interiors combine traditionally rich colours and materials with contemporary sensibilities; ruby red and dark brown are tempered by dusty pink and matte dark green; velvet and dark timber are paired with matte finishes and exuberant wallpaper.

The result evokes the old world glam of 1950s Singapore with a modern whimsical touch. “It’s sophisticated. It’s moody. It’s nostalgic,” says Andre.

His bespoke designs are seen throughout the restaurant, from the stained oak wall finish and rattan-backed chairs to the modular bronze chandeliers and the lattice pattern that has become 5 on 25’s leitmotif.

The private dining suites – one seats 12, and the other eight – are no less dramatic, with plush sofas against a green onyx wall, hand-tufted lattice carpets and mint green, cut glass chandeliers.

“There’s a sense of eclecticism in these rooms. I wanted to create an imagined narrative in which the diner being invited to dinner at the home of a well-travelled, sophisticated Chinese family,” Andre says.

Mirrored panels, latticed ceiling, wallpaper and mismatched tableware adds an eclectic touch to the space.

“Chinese restaurants are always tricky to design. With 5 on 25, though, I felt I was able to push its personality a bit further with the idea of dining in a private home.”
With this narrative, he elevated the aesthetics without deviating too dramatically from the other F&B outlets on the same floor.
